Q&A with Lacquan McMurray

This month our feature story is all about Lacquan who has been an apprentice with the Youth Team for over a year.

Q: What apprenticeship are you doing with the Haringey Early Help Youth Team?
A: I have just finished a Business Administration Level 2 with the Tracking Team and have now progressed onto a Level 3.

Q: Tell us about yourself
A: I have many interests outside academia and spend much of my free time, going to my local gymnasium. I also enjoy spending quality time with my family and socialising with friends. Before this apprenticeship I had only been on one holiday, however now thankfully earning money has enabled me to travel abroad three times already to Croatia, Lithuania and Barcelona. These have been the best experiences of my life so far!

Before starting this apprenticeship with Haringey I studied at Barnet and Southgate College where I gained my AAT Level 2 in Accounts.

Q: What made you choose that role?
A: I chose this role because I felt it was the best thing for me to get an understanding of how the work life in general works. I wanted to learn whilst earning some money so I could do all the things I wanted to do in 2016. I did not want to do a full time course in college any more as I was keen to start work.

In addition, I have many family members (including my brother) and friends that have gone through this exact same apprenticeship root doing business administration in Enfield Council, so luckily for me I had many people to bounce off and to discuss their experience about what they had gained from their apprenticeship. I do not regret this decision one bit as it has helped me mature, communicate with adults better, manage my own money, boost my self-confidence and be ten times more independent.

Q: What did you buy with your first pay cheque?
A: For my first pay cheque I brought some new clothes and shoes. I ordered my provisional licence and started my driving lessons immediately when my provisional arrived.

Q: How do you see your future?
A: I’m not exactly sure how I see my future just yet, but hopefully with many new experiences and adventures!

Q: What music do you listen to?
A: I respect all genres of music coming from a multi-culture background, but growing up my parents played a lot of 90’s RnB music around me which I enjoyed listening to and still do. I also like rap music.

Q: Describe your manager in 3 words?
A: Intelligent, hardworking and positive.

Q: What is your dream holiday?
A: My dream holiday will be to go to Dubai.

Q: What job did you want to do when you were a child?
A: I wanted to be a footballer or an architect as I was good and passionate for both.

Q: What advice would you give to a young person interested in doing an apprenticeship?
A: My advice to a young person, who wants to get an apprenticeship, would firstly be; don’t just do it for the money. Go into a profession that you wouldn’t mind waking up in the morning for. Furthermore something you would want to thrive in and get to the top. On the other hand, if you are someone who is not exactly sure what you want to do and feel you are not confident enough, just go for it like I did and see the benefits in the near future!
